Make Steamed Green Beans Step-By-Step

Beans? Sure. But how to fix the fresh ones?
Easy. Nip 'em off and let them get steamed.

Step 1: Get your hands on some fresh beans!

Here they are. The beans you just brought home from the farmer's market. Or maybe picked from the neighbor's back yard. (With permission. They were on vacation. You know...)

Step 2: Nip the ends off.

Nip, snip, snap, or cut. Using your fingers or a knife, remove a little bit off each end of the bean.

Then either cut or break them up into bite-sized pieces or leave whole, according to your eating preference.

Step 3: Steam your beans! (Option #1)

Put 1/2" to 1" of water in the bottom of a saucepan. Add beans. (The water will usually not cover the beans; this pan only has just a few beans in it.) Cover and bring the water to a boil, at which point it will begin to steam. Turn down the heat and cook to your desired doneness. My desired doneness is about 5 minutes.

Step 4: Steam-fry your beans! (Option #2)

Alternately, heat a little olive oil in the bottom of a frying pan. Add your beans and just a teaspoon or so of water. Stir, cover, and cook over medium-low heat to your desired doneness. Stir several times during the cooking period to prevent scorching.

Step 5: Enjoy!

Time to eat your beans! You may wish to "dress" them with some butter or a dairy product like plain yogurt or commercial sour cream. These beans are dressed with a fresh-made Fil Mjölk culture, which was delicious!
