Dill history & personality |
Oh, honey. It's ALL about the pickles!
Dill is related to parsley, carrots, parsnips, fennel, and coriander / cilantro by virtue of its little "umbrella-like" flowering pattern.
It is native to Russia, western Africa, and the Mediterranean. Dill was considered a sign of wealth by the ancient Greeks and Romans, a testament to its reputation as a healing herb. |
Dill lore |
The root word dilla means "to lull" in ancient Norse. Dill may be use to calm digestion and encourage sleep. |
Dill is healthy! |
Dill calms digestion, aids sleep, and serves as a mild detoxifyer. It helps detox the chemicals from charcoal broiling — an excellent reason to use plenty of fresh dill on your next batch of grilled salmon!
Dill is generally regarded as having neutral energy.

Fresh dill as food |
Both the leaves and the seeds may be used as food. Dill is excellent in salads like cucumber, potato, or macaroni salad, or chopped into a fresh green salad. It's excellent with fish, especially salmon and salmon chowder. Next time you fix up a batch of egg salad, snip in a little fresh dill and enjoy!
Of course, then there are dill pickles...

Dill — Try this: Make a dill sauce by combining snipped fresh dill with some plain yogurt. Other additions to consider include a little prepared mustard or some minced garlic. Chill and serve with potatoes or fish.
